Presidential Disaster Declaration. "On November 1, 2000, an intense winter storm brought high winds and heavy, wet snowfall to portions of northeastern Wyoming. In Crook and Weston counties, snowfall rates were one to two inches an hour. Snowfall totals in the plains were from 4 to 8 inches, while in the Bear Lodge Mountains, totals were from 8 to 24 inches. The Four Corners area in northeastern Weston County reported the most snowfall at 24 inches. High, sustained winds up to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph caused blizzard conditions and toppled 600 power poles. Seven thousand people were without power; almost 15 miles of lines had to be replaced. The city of Moorcroft had more than 150 stranded semi-trucks after the interstate was shut down. In Campbell County, the temperatures were too warm for snow and rain fell throughout the day, but high winds were reported with gusts more than 50 mph at times. The highest gust in Campbell County was 64 mph at Echeta." - WY Hazard Mitigation Plan 2021-2026

"Intense rain hit Colorado Monday afternoon and caused a lot of flooding in a short period of time. Highlands Ranch, Aurora and other parts of the southeastern zone of the Denver metro area saw a storm blow through that brought anywhere from 1 to over 2 inches of rain in less than an hour. A lot of these areas saw that rain in under 30 minutes! Flash Flood Warnings covered all of northern Douglas County and Aurora." - CBS Colorado

"A flash flood Tuesday afternoon forced the closure of Zion National Park, sending flood waters and mud through both the south entrance in Springdale and the east entrance in Kane County. State Route 9 was closed at Rockville as heavy flooding left more than a foot of mud down Zion Park Boulevard from the park entrance to Blondie’s Diner." - St. George News

"An unprecedented storm pounded Moab for nearly three hours. A mixture of flood water, mud, rocks and entire trees gushed over bridges in Mill Creek in Moab. Cars floated through the busiest streets in town, and restaurant customers waded through knee-deep water. The flash floods filled dozens of homes and almost every business on Main Street. Moab's mayor has declared a state of emergency after dozens of businesses and homes were flooded. All Moab trails, street entrances and bridges are closed and extremely dangerous as crews and the community work to clean up. And some are still without water." - KSL.com

An intense moisture-laden storm combined with a push of unseasonably cold air from Canada to produce blizzard conditions and very heavy snowfall over eastern Wyoming, western South Dakota, and the adjacent Plains states. A chilling rain turned to snow, accompanied by 50-70 mph gusts, causing extensive livestock mortality, estimated at 60,000-100,000 head of cattle across the region. The western Black Hills in Crook County received up to 5 feet of snow.

The longest (2.8 miles) and largest mass-movement earth failure in Colorado history occurred 3 hours after a short, intense rainstorm, and two weeks after a late spring snowstorm. The fast-moving landslide dropped 2100 feet in elevation and covered almost a square mile of the West Salt Creek valley with 38 million cubic yards of debris. Three local men, who were investigating an earlier, much smaller, landslide, died during the catastrophic event. The toe of the landslide came within 200 feet of active gas-production wellheads. The loss of irrigation ditches and water impacted local ranches and residents.

"Communities around Drake and Glen Haven in Larimer County reported destructive flooding flowing down from the Cameron Peak Fire burn scar. The fire burned less than a mile from the communities surrounding the town of Glen Haven. Two years later, the river is still black, flooding every time it rains.
'This is the eighth time this summer,' said Jim Morton, who lives just outside Glen Haven. 'Prior to the fire it wasn’t an issue, but that burn scar just won’t hold the water.' The front of Morton's property was completely covered in silt and ash that flowed down from the burn scar, flooding outside the banks of the river. Large boulders were tossed around the area, showing the power of the water.
So far this year, the National Weather Service has issued 31 flash flood warnings for the Glen Haven area, including 10 this month alone." - 9News

Lakota Sioux people are said to have set the Bighorn Fire while retreating from General Crook's troops. It is estimated that the fire burned 500,000 acres. A first-hand account says that on August 3, "a terrible red glow" lit up the midnight sky," and looking westward, they saw "the whole front of the Big Horn mountains on fire."
