Web resources for drought planning

National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) is designed as a user-based drought information system that assesses potential drought indicators and impacts in order to provide tools for anticipating, preparing and mitigating the effects of drought.

Drought Resource page from the Colorado Climate Center;  Colorado Climate Center monitors climate over time scales of weeks to years. Its goal is to reduce Colorado's vulnerability to climate variability and change.

Climate Prediction Center: United States Seasonal Drought Outlook; contains a map of probable trends in drought conditions for the U.S. and a summary of the likely conditions for the season.

Planning for Drought;  a Colorado State University drought fact sheet discussing drought facts, plant growth, animal performance, water quality and shortages, and management options.

Drought and Weather; contains links to drought and weather organizations, prediction and monitoring tools, reports, papers, and articles, and state and regional drought and weather resources.

Colorado Office of Emergency Management Drought Monitoring; this page contains general facts about droughts, information on the Colorado Drought Task Force, and links to resources that maintain information on water supplies, stream flows, weather, etc., which affect Colorado’s drought conditions.

Colorado Division of Water Resources; contains information about various programs of the Department of Water Resources and links to other sites on water management.

Colorado Water Conservation Board; Colorado Water Conservation Board was created in 1937 for the purpose of aiding in the protection and development of the waters of the state.  The mission statement of the CWCB is: Conserve, Develop, Protect, and Manage Colorado’s Water for Present and Future Generations.  The site has information on the CWCB’s water programs including water supply protection, flood protection, and conservation and drought planning.

Drought in the Boulder Area; contains the dialogue of a fall 2000 email forum among Boulder area citizens and water resource scientists on drought, fire, and flood, as well as links to state and federal agencies and other drought links.

Colorado Drought Mitigation and Response Plan; Colorado Drought Mitigation and Response Plan was developed to provide an effective and systematic means for the State of Colorado to reduce the impacts of water shortages over the short or long term.  The Plan outlines a mechanism for coordinated drought monitoring, impact assessment, response to emergency drought problems, and mitigation of long term drought impacts.

Colorado Water Resources Research Institute; Colorado Water Resources Research Institute (CWRRI), an affiliate of Colorado State University, is a statewide institute with the purpose of "developing, implementing, and coordinating water and water-related research programs in the state, and transferring the results of research to potential users."

CDC Climate of the Interior West: Drought/Flood Monitoring ; contains links to western state river basin forecast centers, the current U.S. drought map, maps of recent western precipitation, and links to references and drought mitigation products.

Drought Monitor; This USDA, NOAA, and National Drought Mitigation Center site contains information on current drought conditions, archives of past drought monitor reports, forecasts, and links to other agencies related to drought and climate.

National Drought Policy Commission; the National Drought Policy Commission was created by the National Drought Policy Act of 1998.  The Commission is composed of fifteen members, representative of all levels of government and other drought-impacted groups, and provides recommendations on the creation of an integrated, coordinated federal policy designed to prepare for and respond to serious drought emergencies.  The site contains NDPC reports, news archives, and drought links.

National Drought Mitigation Center the NDMC helps people and institutions develop and implement measures to reduce societal vulnerability to drought.  Based at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, it stresses preparation and risk management rather than crisis management.  The site has sections on current conditions, climatology, methodologies, mitigation, drought impacts, drought science, and drought links.

NOAA’s Drought Information Center; this is a roundup of the various NOAA web sites and information on drought and climate conditions.  It also includes external links.  Categories of links include current drought information, background information, and state drought information.

Boulder Area Sustainability Information Network 2002 Drought in the Boulder Creek Watershed; BASIN is providing this page to summarize water supply conditions in the Boulder Creek watershed and provide quick access to local response to anticipated shortages.  The site has sections on mountain snowpack and water supply, drought variability and planning, drought response in Boulder County, local perspectives, and domestic water use pattern.
