IPCC Working Group III: Mitigation of Climate Change

"The WG III volume analyses mitigation options for the main sectors in the near-term, addressing also cross-sectorial matters such as synergies, co-benefits and trade-offs. It also provides information on long-term mitigation strategies for various stablization levels, paying special attention to implications of different short-term strategies for achieving long-term goals.

"As part of the IPCC, Working Group III is charged to assess available information on the science of climate change, in particular that arising from human activities. In performing its assessments the WGIII is concerned with the scientific, technical, environmental, and economic and social aspects of mitigation of climate change."(from WGIII site)

Mitigation is the technological change and substitution that reduce resource inputs and emissions per unit of output. Although several social, economic and technological policies would produce an emission reduction, with respect to climate change, mitigation means implementing policies to reduce GHG emissions and enhance sinks. The approval session on the Summary of Policy Makers for the WG III volume took place on 4th May 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. The publication of the WG III report is expected in October 2007.
