WWA is sponsoring a series of free Climate Workshops for water managers.

Target audience: Municipal, state, and federal water managers, extension specialists, other policy makers interested in climate and water resources management.

Upcoming Workshops: (some dates yet to be determined)

Climate Change Modeling for Front Range Water Providers (Denver, February 1, 2008)
WWA is organizing an education workshop for the Front Range water providers that will cover the fundamentals and differences of GCMs, emissions scenarios, downscaling techniques, and hydrology modeling. Researchers: Lowrey, Udall, Rajagopalan.

Forecast Verification Workshop (Boulder, February 19, 2008)
In order to gage forecast quality, users must know the accuracy and skill of forecasts, be they seasonal climate forecasts or water supply forecasts. This workshop will introduce water managers to the basics of forecast verification statistics using water supply forecasts. Presenters will include NRCS forecasters, NOAA Western Regional personnel, and NOAA CBRFC forecasters. Invitees will include Colorado and Wyoming Water managers. Researchers Ray, Webb, Wolter, Hoerling, Hamill, Udall.

Climate Change for Water Resource Managers Workshop (Boulder Project)
In conjunction with local consulting firm who is working on a NOAA CPO grant to study climate change with a local water provider (Stratus), sponsor a workshop on climate change for water managers. Invitees will include New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming managers. Workshop scheduled for mid-August 2007. Researchers Udall, Lowery, Ray, Webb, Smith (Stratus), Doesken (CO State Climatologist).

State Climatologists Climate Change Workshop:
This workshop will bring together climatologists from the 11 Western states to discuss their needs with respect to climate change. A meeting summary will be produced. Guidance to NOAA, NRCS, USGS, and other providers of climate products will be be created. Researchers Udall, Lowery, Ray, Webb, Smith (Stratus), Doesken (CO State Climatologist)

Introduction to IPCC AR4 Workshop
Water managers have requested a desire for basic science information on climate change. This one-day workshop will provide an overview of the WG1 Technical Summary, and the water sector information from WG2. Researchers Pulwarty, Kenney, Udall, Ray, Alvord.

Engineering Consultants Climate Workshop

Invite all major water consultants to a one-day workshop to discuss their climate product and information needs. Focus will be primarily on climate change, but climate variability will be covered as well. We will meet needs where practical and provide NOAA with a summary of the workshop including needs. Researchers Udall, Webb, Ray, Alvord.

Past Workshops

Climate and Drought Forecasting, December 2005 (separate ones in Colorado and Wyoming)

Topics:  NOAA/CPC operational climate seasonal forecasts, the NOAA-USDA Climate Monitor, Klaus Wolter's Southwest Experimental Seasonal Forecasts,  and CDC experimental 6-10 day and 8-14 day intra-seasonal climate forecasts.
Researchers: Lowrey, Ray, Wolter, Udall, Hoerling
