The Utah Streamflow Forecast and Hydrometeorlogical Tools Workshop: Using & Improving NWS online tool
(Saint George, UT, March 15th 2011)
Participants at this workshop will have the opportunity to hear about how streamflow forecasts are made, and will receive training in a computer lab setting on using the new and existing NOAA online resources. Participants will also be able to provide opinions and insight directly to the developers so the NOAA can improve the web-based tools. There will be exercises designed to glean further information from participants to help in the development and improvement of online resources.
Front Range Water Providers Workshop (Boulder, CO, December 9, 2010)
The Western Water Assessment hosted a one-day workshop for our partners in the Front Range water provider community. Our objectives for this workshop were to:
present ongoing and planned WWA research projects and activities most relevant to Front Range water interests, solicit input on these projects and learn about your climate-related concerns, discuss recent climate studies involving Front Range water providers and lessons learned from them, given the above, generate ideas for future WWA efforts
Dealing with Drought - Adapting to a Changing Climate (Castle Rock, CO, October 13, 2009; Glenwood Springs, CO, October 16, 2009; Durango, CO, October 22, 2009)
Climate Change and Utah's Water Supply (Salt Lake City, February 24, 2009)
WWA co-sponsored a Symposium on Climate Change and Utah’s Water Supply in partnership with the Salt Lake City National Weather Service Forecast Office and the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center. The one day event was held at the Salt Lake City Library on February 24th, 2008 from 9:30am to 4pm. Topics for sessions include Climate Change, Water Supplies, and Utah; Water Supply and Seasonal Forecasts; and Climate and Water Information Needs.
Forecast Verification Workshop (Boulder, February 19, 2008)
In order to gage forecast quality, users must know the accuracy and skill of forecasts--whether seasonal climate forecasts or water supply forecasts. This workshop will introduce water managers to the basics of forecast verification statistics using water supply forecasts. Presenters will include NRCS forecasters, NOAA Western Regional personnel, and NOAA CBRFC forecasters. Invitees will include Colorado and Wyoming Water managers. Researchers Ray, Webb, Wolter, Hoerling, Hamill, Udall.
Climate Change Modeling for Front Range Water Providers (Denver, February 1, 2008)
WWA is organizing an education workshop for the Front Range water providers that will cover the fundamentals and differences of GCMs, emissions scenarios, downscaling techniques, and hydrology modeling. Researchers: Lowrey, Udall, Rajagopalan.
Dendrohydrological Workshops: Increasing interest by water managers in tree-ring reconstructions of streamflow has led to demand for a hands-on workshop on how the reconstructions are generated and assessed. The goal of these workshops is to provide managers with the tools to better interpret and apply the reconstructions to planning. Researchers Woodhouse, Lukas, Webb.
Climate Change for Water Resource Managers Workshop (Boulder Project), April 2, 2008, NOAA
In conjunction with local consulting firm who is working on a NOAA CPO grant to study climate change with a local water provider (Stratus), sponsor a workshop on climate change for water managers. Invitees will include New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming managers. Workshop scheduled for mid-August 2007. Researchers Udall, Lowery, Ray, Webb, Smith (Stratus), Doesken (CO State Climatologist).
State Climatologists Climate Change Workshop: (date yet to be determined)
This workshop will bring together climatologists from the 11 Western states to discuss their needs with respect to climate change. A meeting summary will be produced. Guidance to NOAA, NRCS, USGS, and other providers of climate products will be be created. Researchers Udall, Lowery, Ray, Webb, Smith (Stratus), Doesken (CO State Climatologist)
Engineering Consultants Climate Workshop (date yet to be determined)
Invite all major water consultants to a one-day workshop to discuss their climate product and information needs. Focus will be primarily on climate change, but climate variability will be covered as well. We will meet needs where practical and provide NOAA with a summary of the workshop including needs. Researchers Udall, Webb, Ray, Alvord.
Climate and Tourism Workshop, January 2007, NCAR
Tourism and recreation in the West are a large part of the economy and are strongly linked to climate. This workshop will focus on the development of a strategic research agenda to assess the economic, socio-cultural and environmental implications of climate extremes, variability and change for sustainable tourism.
Pulwarty, Kenney, Alvord, Udall.
Climate Change for Water Resource Managers Workshop. In conjunction with local consulting firm who is working on a NOAA CPO grant to study climate change with a local water provider (Stratus), the WWA will sponsor a workshop on climate change for water managers. Invitees will include Colorado and Wyoming managers. Researchers Udall, Lowrey, Ray, Webb, Smith (Stratus), Doesken (CSU). Date to be determined. Front Range Water Provider Climate Change Workshop. On November 17, 2006 in Golden, CO, WWA sponsored a workshop with Denver Water to allow interaction among Front Range water providers on how different entities are planning, or might plan, to deal with climate change related impacts. This workshop was attended by water managers from Aurora, Westminster, Denver Water, Thornton, CWCB, Colorado Springs Utilities, NCWCD, and others.
Climate Change and Variability in the San Juan Mountains. On October 11-13 in Durango, CO, WWA co-sponsored a workshop on purpose of the conference was to facilitate information-sharing and interaction between scientists and local stakeholders regarding the implications and potential impacts of climate variability and change in the San Juan Mountain region. A second goal was to begin development of a San Juan Mountain (SJM) Climate Initiative, a stakeholder and scientist driven climate research and outreach program.
Water, Drought and Wyoming's Climate. WWA co-sponsored an all day workshop hosted by the University of Wyoming and others dedicated to understanding how climate variability and change impacts Wyoming’s water resources. This workshop was October 5, 2006 in Laramie, WY.
Workshops with water managers in 2005. WWA hosted two Climate Workshops for water managers in December 2005 in Cheyenne, WY and Golden, CO.
Colorado River Basin Water Year 2005 Outlook Briefing, Nov 9, 2004. WWA co-sponsored a water supply briefing for interested principal Colorado River stakeholders and focused on seasonal hydroclimatic outlooks for the Water Year 2005 (October 2004-September 2005). The briefing 1) provided an assessment of current and projected climate conditions and water availability impacting the lower and upper Colorado River Basin, 2) described the various forecast tools available for seasonal climate and hydrologic predictions and 3) established a protocol to provide regular updates of these forecast products to interested stakeholders.
Climate and Drought Forecasting, December 2005 (separate ones in Colorado and Wyoming)
