"Climate assessments are collaborative processes where experts summarize and evaluate the current state of knowledge about variability and changes in the physical climate system and reach consensus conclusions that include confidence statements regarding these conclusions."
"Climate impact assessments are collective, deliberative processes by which experts review, analyze, and synthesize the effects of climate on natural and human systems in response to users' information needs to address to key questions, uncertainties, decisions or policies"
1) What type of climate impact
assessment? (Brief description in 1-3 sentences) What is the largest geographic scale assessment to consider?
2) What types and/or sources of climate data/information are being used? And how is this information being used? Downscaled, variables, ….
3) How was the climate information in the assessment produced? Use of data and manipulation versus off the shelf
4) What information/sources did they rely on? NOAA, IPCC, consultant, …
5) What information was lacking? Was not accessible. Not in a usable format or is buried in a cryptic database Does not exist. Data/information/research gap
6) How was uncertainty in projections of future climate and climate impacts dealt with in the climate impact assessment. Ignored, deterministic, probablistic,…..
7) How did the climate impact assessment feedback to influence or alter activities within NOAA such as data availability, observations and monitoring, modeling, forecasts, outlooks and projections? (if possible)
Overarching Questions
What near and long term opportunities are there for NOAA as part of
a national climate service to support future regional, state, local, or other climate impact assessment efforts?
Are there any best practices in terms of how regions, states, localities, or other groups have done climate impact assessments?
