Andy Barrett's research focuses on the hydrology of mountain and upland drainage basins.  His interests include the hydrology of seasonally snow-covered and glacierized (ice-covered) drainage basins, modelling hydrological processes in mountain drainage basins, and the use of satellite-derived information in the study and modelling of these processes.

Currently, his work for the Western Water Assessment is to develop long-term time series of runoff for headwater basins  of the Upper Colorado and South Platte river basins.  These time series will be used to examine the response of existing water resource systems to 20th Century and potential future climate variability.  In addition to his WWA work, Andy has developed methods to integrate satellite-derived maps of snow covered area with catchment-scale hydrologic models.   He has also investigated how water moves through and beneath glaciers, and how glacier drainage systems develop during the summer melt season.
